Professor Jacinta A. Opara

Professor Jacinta A. Opara, Vice Chancellor of Dominican University, Ibadan-Nigeria is a member of AIMTDS Board of Directors/Governing Council. After her primary and secondary education, she was trained as a science educator at University of Ibadan and University of Nigeria, Nsukka before proceeding for graduate studies at Universidad de Granada, Spain and Akershus University, Lillestrom-Norway. She earned postgraduate degrees from Universidad Central de Nicaragua, Universidad Catolica de Murcia and Universidad Azteca, Chalco-Mexico. She is a leading African environmental scholar, scientist, educator, health researcher, consultant and development activist with the combined power of management and human rights.

Prof Opara is Chairman of Governing Council of the Institute of Policy Management Development; President of African Association for Teaching and Learning; founding Co-Executive Director, Center for Environment and Community Development and serves on the Board/Governing Council of Mediterranean Center for Social and Educational Research, Rome-Italy; Development Africa Consortium amongst other institutions and agencies including non-governmental organizations (NGOs). She is a Visiting Scholar of Gender, Environmental Peace and Security at International Institute of Sociology of Law (University of Basque Country), Gipuzkoa-Spain; Visiting Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Bulawayo-Zimbabwe; Visiting Professor & Research Consultant at Metropolitan International University, Kampala-Uganda and Visiting Professor of Geography & Environmental Management at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria-Nigeria.

She has a proven record of teaching, research, scholarship and evidence of administrative experiences that had earned her respect of peers both nationally and internationally. She possesses demonstratable strong interpersonal and team-building spirit/skills and ability to build bridges between all relevant stakeholders across time and space. Since the 1990s, she has held teaching, research and consulting experiences across Africa, America, Europe and Asia. Her working experiences have enabled her work in virtually all the geopolitical zones in Africa. She has held Visiting, Adjunct, Sabbatical or tenured appointments at a number of private, State and Federal Universities. Hence, she is very familiar with the local and international higher education landscape. She is a detribalized African possessing excellent skills of living with people of different cultures and languages.

Prof Opara began her career as Science Teacher at College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu-Enugu State, Nigeria under National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) and later Research Fellow at Afro-Euro Centre for Development Studies, Accra-Ghana. Her administrative experiences in higher education system are broad, deep and current having served in various capacities as Head of Department, Dean and Director and Deputy Vice Chancellor. She is a Fellow of Institute of Management Consultants; Fellow of African Scientific Institute; Fellow of the Board of Quality Standards; Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Professionals and Fellow of Chartered Institute of Administration. Professor Opara has worked on a number of international projects, partnership initiatives and human capacity-building programmes with a wide range of stakeholders. She has organized several international conferences, seminars and workshops across the globe. She has received several awards, fellowships and grants including the Erasmus Mundus of the European Commission, Brussels-Belgium and the prestigious IATEL Award for Academic Excellence in 2015. She maintains consulting status with several local and international agencies in the areas of environment, health, gender, human rights, peace and security, sexuality, education, human capacity building and community development.
